AVON — Acting Chief Kevin Partridge reports that the Avon Fire Department battled a 2-alarm house fire on Sunday night.
On Sunday, Dec. 3, at approximately 8:23 p.m., Avon Fire received a call reporting the smell of smoke in the area of East Main Street and Gill Street. Avon Fire responded to the area and located a fire at a 2-story home containing two apartments in the rear of 173 East Main Street. Two structures are located on the property with two apartments in each.
Upon arrival, Captain Matt Lucio on Engine 3 reported heavy fire showing from the property in the rear and requested a working fire assignment bring mutual aid to the scene to assist. Upon further investigation he reported that there was heavy fire in the first and second floors of the building, and they would be commencing a search of the building for a report of a person inside. Captain Frank Currie arrived on scene, assumed command and called a second alarm.
A short time later it was determined through other tenants that no residents were home at the time of the fire.
During the response, a Brockton firefighter was on the second floor of the home when the floor burnt away, causing him to fall to the first floor. The firefighter put in a mayday call but was able to gain back his bearings and self-extricate from the home. He did not sustain injuries but was evaluated on scene.
Mutual aid was provided by fire crews from Holbrook, Stoughton, Randolph, Canton, and Brockton, and station coverage was provided by the Brockton and Abington Fire Departments.
The fire remains under investigation by the Avon Fire Department and State Troopers from the Office of the State Fire Marshal.
