Whitman Fire Department Extinguishes House Fire on School Street

Family of Three Displaced as a Result of the Fire

WHITMAN — Chief Timothy Grenno reports that the Whitman Fire Department extinguished a house fire on School Street this morning that displaced a family of three.

No injuries were reported and the family was not home at the time of the fire.

At approximately 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Whitman firefighters responded to a report of a fire at a home at 293 School St. Upon arrival, firefighters found smoke coming from the front door and first floor windows.

Lt. Nicholas Grasso reported it as a working fire and crews from the Abington and Hanson fire departments were called to respond to the scene, along with a Halifax Fire ambulance.

Firefighters located the fire in a basement bedroom and quickly knocked down the flames.

The fire was able to be held to the basement and stairwell. The house sustained moderate heat, smoke and water damage and Chief Grenno estimates that approximately $80,000 in damage was done.

The residents, a woman and her two children, were not home at the time of the fire.

The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental, and is under investigation by the Whitman Fire Department and the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

The displaced residents will be using the assistance of the American Red Cross and family for housing while the house is uninhabitable.

Firefighters were able to safely rescue the pet rabbit from the home.

“Due to the quick response of our firefighters, we were able to keep the fire from spreading throughout the rest of the house,” Chief Grenno said. “Thankfully no one was hurt and I would like to thank the neighboring departments who responded to assist.”
