Whitman Fire Department Welcomes Three New Firefighters

WHITMAN — Chief Timothy J. Grenno is pleased to announce that the Whitman Fire Department has hired three new full-time firefighters. 

Whitman natives Zack Baldwin and Russell Lucas and Hanson native Jerry Thompson — each of whom is a Whitman-Hanson Regional High School alum — joined the department this month and have begun work as paramedics. They head to the Massachusetts Fire Academy on Nov. 2 to begin their full-time firefighting careers.

Prior to joining the Whitman Fire Department, Baldwin worked as an EMT for Brewster Ambulance Service in Quincy.

Lucas has worked at South Shore Hospital in a variety of roles over the last several years, including as an emergency department technician and most recently as an EMT. During that time he also worked as a call firefighter for the Hanson Fire Department. 

Thompson also worked as a call firefighter in Hanson, in addition to his role as a groundskeeper for the Whitman-Hanson Regional School District.

“I’m incredibly excited to have Firefighters Baldwin, Lucas and Thompson join our department,” Chief Grenno said. “Each of these men has been a part of our community for their entire lives and have displayed a determination and commitment to helping others during their young careers. I have no doubt that they’ll make great contributions as full-time firefighters.”

The addition of three new full-time members represents the first expansion of the Whitman Fire Department’s staff in more than 50 years. The expansion is the direct result of the community’s approval of a Proposition 2 1/2 override at Town Meeting in May.

Whitman Fire became a full-time department in 1965, and in that time its call volume increased from just under 500 per year to more than 2,600 in 2016. The additions of Firefighters Baldwin, Lucas and Thompson will enable the department to have an additional firefighter working each shift throughout the day, improving its level of service to the town.
