NEWBURYPORT — Fire Chief Stephen Bradbury III reports that the Newburyport Fire Department and mutual aid partners responded to a boat fire on the Merrimack River.
On Monday, June 3, at approximately 11:54 a.m., the Newburyport Fire Department was notified of a boat fire at the Newburyport Boat Basin, 346 Merrimac St.
On arrival, companies found that an approximately 26-foot recreational boat with twin engines was burning and had been moved away from other boats in the marina to the other side of the Merrimack River. There, the Salisbury Fire Boat and Newburyport Harbormaster’s boat were used to monitor the fire in an area that provided no threats to other boats or structures.
The boat will be reached and towed from the area once the high tide returns. Low tide has left the boat stranded in mud, where it continues to burn.
There are no reported injuries.
The cause of the fire will be investigated by the Newburyport Fire Department.
“I want to credit those from the Merrimac Yacht Basin who worked hard to get the burning boat moved away from other boats in the marina, which prevented this incident from potentially being much worse,” said Chief Bradbury. “I also want to thank the Salisbury Fire Department for the quick response of their fire boat, which complemented our Harbormaster’s vessel at the fire, and to thank the Environmental Police and U.S. Coast Guard as well.”
