DURHAM — Superintendent Dr. Robert Shaps and Principal Misty Lowe proudly share that Mast Way School Digital Learning Specialist Susan Leifer received a Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.
The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) honors K-12 teachers who have demonstrated excellence in mentoring individuals from underrepresented groups in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education. Receiving the award is the highest honor a STEM educator can receive for outstanding teaching in the United States.
Leifer was one of five educators in New Hampshire to receive the award.
“I am deeply honored and thrilled to be named a recipient of this award. While I am incredibly humbled by this recognition, I must emphasize that I am the teacher I am today because of the principals who believed in me, the colleagues who collaborated and inspired me, the students who grew with me, and the administration that continually supported me,” said Leifer. “This award is a reflection of the collective effort of all those who have contributed to my journey and to the wonderful learning environment fostered by Mast Way School.”
As a Presidential Awardee, Leifer will receive a certificate signed by former President Biden and a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation. Leifer is also invited to Washington D.C. to attend a series of recognition events and professional development opportunities.
Leifer was a semifinalist for the award in 2022.
“Every day, Mast Way students and staff benefit from the educational experience Ms. Leifer creates. She helps students push themselves to reach their potential while creating a lighthearted environment for them to learn. She is always finding innovative ways to explore lessons and to teach our staff how to leverage technology and educational resources,” said Principal Lowe. “The Mast Way community and I are pleased to see her excellence recognized at such a high level.”
“Ms. Leifer has earned this prestigious honor through her unwavering dedication to Oyster River students and teammates,” said Superintendent Shaps. “The learning opportunities she creates allow Mast Way School students and staff to have an immersive understanding of technology and STEM. We are honored to have her on our staff building curiosity and encouraging critical thinking in our students.”
