MIDDLEBOROUGH — Chief Owen Thompson reports that the Middleborough Fire Department battled a garage fire that was fully engulfed on Wednesday morning.
On Wednesday, Jan. 8, at approximately 11:35 a.m., Middleborough Fire responded to a fire in a detached garage at 107 Oak St.
The four-bay garage was unoccupied at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported. The owner of the nearby single-family home noticed smoke coming from the garage and called 911.
On arrival, firefighters observed heavy smoke showing through multiple bays of the garage and fire that extended through the building’s roof. Crews aggressively attacked the fire to extinguish the flames and remain on the scene, conducting extensive overhauling.
The building, which features a towering chimney, was destroyed by the fire. Although the chimney’s stability was a safety concern, firefighters determined it was sturdy enough to continue safely battling the blaze.
Due to high winds at the time of the fire, embers from the garage drifted, lighting several spots of grass and bushes that had to be extinguished by firefighters.
The Lakeville Fire Department provided mutual aid at the scene. The Raynham Fire Department provided station coverage. Rehab services were provided on scene by the Department of Fire Services Special Operations, Coastal Ambulance, and the Providence Canteen.
The fire remains under investigation by the Middleborough Fire Department and State Police assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
