CANTON — Superintendent-Director Jill Rossetti and Academic Director Dr. Paul Bavuso are proud to share that Blue Hills Regional Technical School is holding a presentation on the challenges and opportunities posed in education by artificial intelligence (AI) technology.
The free event, called “Understanding and Navigating AI for Parents & Guardians,” is taking place at Blue Hills Regional Technical School from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 16.
Everyone who plans to attend the event, which is for parents, guardians and family members aged 12 and up, is asked to first register on www.eventbrite.com.
This presentation and a workshop will be given by Greg Kulowiec, educator, technology expert and principal of academic consulting company The Kulowiec Group.
The event aims to inform parents about the potential pitfalls of artificial intelligence, such as plagiarism, cheating and an overreliance on the technology, while also exploring the opportunities for educational growth through AI. Attendees are expected to develop an increased awareness of the risks and advantages of AI, as the technology has quickly emerged and has already impacted various aspects of society, such as social media, advertising, healthcare and even public safety.
The adoption of this technology has been celebrated for its efficient data analyzation capabilities and automated processes, allowing for creative applications such as performance tracking and the customization of educational materials. Artificial intelligence can be used by educators to streamline administrative tasks, and the technology can be used to provide educational materials to students in a way that makes learning more personalized, adaptive and tailored to their individual needs.
But the artificial intelligence industry has also sparked ethical and legal concerns, including copyright infringement, an absence of regulatory oversight, data privacy, algorithmic bias, liability for errors, and a lack of transparency in the sourcing of information.
Students from the Blue Hills Culinary Program will be providing a selection of light food and refreshments during the event.
“Education is not exempt from the impact of AI,” Academic Director Bavuso said. “At Blue Hills Regional, we want to provide this opportunity for parents, guardians and educators to become more aware and informed about this issue. We hope that a greater awareness of this issue will help us collectively address some of the pitfalls of AI, such as concerns for an overreliance on this new technology, which can stunt learning and knowledge retention, along with the potential for abuses like plagiarism.”
“I’d like to thank our Academic Department for organizing this important event, providing awareness for our parents about how to address the potential risks posed by artificial intelligence,” said Superintendent-Director Rossetti. “This is a great opportunity for parents to hear about the latest expertise about these dangers, but also to learn about how AI can be used responsibly.”
