ACTON — Chief Anita Arnum reports that the Acton Fire Department and its mutual aid partners successfully contained a fire Tuesday at a property off Quarry Road.
Firefighters found out just before 5 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3, about a fire at 68 Quarry Road, site of the YV Art Museum. Before arriving, crews knew that they were entering a portion of town with limited water supply, so they called for tanker trucks from nearby Boxborough and Stow to come to the scene.
Upon arrival, firefighters discovered a shipping container, used to store some of the museum’s work equipment, fully involved, with there being some exposure. Relying on the water in the tanker trucks, crews aggressively attacked the fire and knocked it down before it could spread further throughout the property. The main museum building is 25 feet away from where the fire started.
In addition to assistance from Boxborough and Stow crews, firefighters from Concord, Littleton and Westford also provided mutual aid.
“We greatly appreciated the assistance of our neighboring departments,” Chief Arnum said. “Our on-duty crew, which knew of the challenges of the water supply in that part of town, made a great call by requesting tanker truck assistance before arriving at the scene.”
The fire was likely accidental, according to a preliminary investigation. The District 14 fire investigation team, which includes personnel from Acton, Carlisle, Concord, Hudson and Stow, was at the scene.
A man at the scene received burns on his hands, but declined further treatment.
The equipment kept in the storage container, including a skid steer loader, was a total loss.
