SOUTH EASTON — Dozens of Southeastern seniors who will begin full-time employment upon their graduation were celebrated last week.
Signing Day celebrates graduating seniors who are signing onto full-time employment with area businesses. A total of 61 students indicated their intention to begin full-time work following graduation at the Signing Day event, which took place on May 9. Along with the students, representatives from the various employers were present at the event.
Superintendent Holly McClanan and Principal Leslie Weckesser offered welcoming remarks.
“What sets you apart as Southeastern students is the attainment of high-demand technical skill that meets the needs of our local workforce and sets you on a path to financial freedom and personal fulfillment,” Superintendent McClanan said. “That is our mission and that is the mission that you — through your hard work and dedication to your craft, and with the support of our employers and the guidance of your teachers — have fulfilled today.”
Southeastern works with dozens of local businesses as industry partners, which offer cooperative education opportunities to students in the school’s 21 vocational programs. Over 370 students took part in cooperative education this year.
“When we started this initiative in 2019, it was a way to stay true to our core values of preparing our students to meet industry needs and providing a skilled workforce,” Principal Weckesser said. “At this third event, I’m proud to report that we have more than quadrupled the number of students that will be signing into full-time employment. We could not do it without our employer partners and we thank them for their dedication to mentoring our students.”
Jacari Stallings, a Marketing student; Miriam Andrade, a Marketing student; Kamaliah Mullins, an Electrical student; and Kaylee Gomez, a Medical Assisting student each spoke about their co-op experiences as well.
As part of the event, students signed a book commemorating their commitment to their vocational career and presented a plaque as a thank you to their employer on behalf of Southeastern.
