MATTAPOISETT — Superintendent Michael S. Nelson, Center School Principal Linda Ashley and Old Hammondtown School Principal Kevin Tavares are pleased to share that students from the schools recently participated in the Mattapoisett Student Art Show.
The student artwork was showcased for family members and friends at the Center School on March 23. Over 450 projects, including paintings, drawings, sculptures and more were displayed. The projects were created by Center School students from Project GROW (preschool) through sixth grade and Old Hammondtown School students from grades 4-6.
“It was great to see and welcome so many families to our art show,” said Greta Anderson, art teacher for both Mattapoisett schools. “We’re so proud of our students and all of their creations.”
Some younger students built structures that move, based on the style of sculptor Alexander Calder. For Project Terra-“pin,” a project joining art and science, second grade students created pins to raise awareness about the conservation of local ecosystems. Peanut, a diamondback terrapin — which is a species of turtle — that has been the focus of many projects led by science teacher Ben Squire, was also at the event. Fourth grade students composed a six-word description to accompany their drawings, inspired by the Six-Word Memoir Project started by Smith Magazine.
“We enjoyed seeing so many families at the event, and the joy and excitement students expressed when pointing out their work,” Principal Ashley said. “There were so many creative projects on display that not only showcased students’ talents, but also connected art to other important subjects like science and writing.”
“Congratulations to Ms. Anderson and all of our Center School and Old Hammondtown students on a successful event,” Superintendent Nelson said. “We would also like to thank Mattapoisett PTA volunteers who helped mount and hang the art pieces.”
Student artwork will be on display in the Center School through the spring.
