NEW LONDON — Superintendent Winfried Feneberg is pleased to announce Kearsarge Regional High School’s March Student of the Month.
Candace Wescom, a junior from Bradford, was selected for the honor based on nominations from school staff and faculty. Wescom is described as a focused and positive individual who engages with the KRHS community in many ways.
“Candace is a student that has a passion for learning and has sought out opportunities to advance her learning in a personalized and meaningful way,” said Assistant Principal Dr. Christopher Geraghty. “Most importantly, Candace interacts with her peers and the adults of Kearsarge in a genuine and kind manner, creating meaningful relationships that enhance our community.”
Students of the Month are nominated and selected by faculty in recognition of their positive conduct and character, both on and off campus. The honor is an acknowledgment of an individual’s positive moral character and their contributions to the school community.
Wescom is a member of the KRHS volleyball, softball, and Unified basketball teams, as well as a participant of Best Buddies, various arts courses, band and jazz band. She also had the opportunity to develop her own Extended Learning Opportunity (ELO), which allows students to acquire knowledge through study outside of the traditional classroom environment.
“After the Percussion Ensemble Class, I wanted to research the impact of music on the brain through the application of neuroscience,” said Wescom. “For this project, I worked with Mrs. Hemingway and developed my own Essential Question and benchmarks for learning. I was able to visit the Berklee College of Music in Boston and interview their professors. As a result of my research, I did a presentation to the Kearsarge Faculty and also had the opportunity to present about the power of the ELO program to the KRSD School Board.”
After high school, Wescom wants to pursue a career that will fuel her passion for helping others, ideally by incorporating music, teaching, therapy and psychology.
