CANTON — Superintendent Derek Folan, Canton High School Principal Jeff Sperling, and Visual Arts Coordinator Patricia Palmer are pleased to announce that artwork by senior Olivia Schnock and sophomore Caroline Ye has been selected for the Emerging Young Artists (EYA) 2023 Juried Exhibition.
The EYA is hosted annually by the College of Visual and Performing Arts at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. The program received submissions from 591 students this year, from which 120 works were selected for the exhibition by CVPA’s Dean Lawrence Jenkins.
A virtual exhibition opening, reception and awards presentation was held on Friday, Jan. 27 for the artists, their teachers, the UMass Dartmouth community and the public.
Schnock’s piece, titled “Stress,” is a digital drawing. It represents the stress behind being an overwhelmed high school student.
“For this piece, I wanted to represent how it feels to be overwhelmed with life, more specifically as a student in high school,” Schnock said. “It looks like a simple eye drawing at first, but the details like the clock and the sticker represent the stress of striving to be perfect and meeting deadlines.”
Ye’s piece, titled “Cherry Blossoms,” is a jewelry design. It is inspired by Japanese culture and the beauty of cherry blossom trees.
“I decided to make a necklace inspired by Japanese culture, so I based my project off of Japanese cherry blossoms,” Ye said. “After looking at some reference images, I was inspired by the structure and flowing movements of cherry blossom branches, so I tried to emulate these features in my design.”
“Congratulations to Olivia and Caroline,” Palmer said. “Having work selected to be part of this highly selective juried exhibition is quite an honor. It is well-deserved recognition of their hard work and passion for the arts that comes through in everything they create.”
Added Principal Sperling: “This is a great achievement for Olivia and Caroline, and we’re proud to see their work recognized among the works of their peers across the region.”
