STOW – Chief John P. Benoit reports that the Stow Fire Department responded to and extinguished a chimney on Saturday.
On Saturday, Feb. 4, at about 5:15 p.m., Stow firefighters responded to 60 Walcott St. for a report of a fire. On arrival crews discovered fire and smoke coming from the chimney of the single-family home.
Using both an internal and external attack, firefighters were able to quickly bring the fire under control. Firefighters then removed excess creosote from inside the chimney, clearing the scene at about 6:45 p.m.
Damage was limited to the chimney. No one was injured.
A preliminary investigation has determined that the fire was caused by a buildup of creosote linked to a wood stove insert.
“We received a strong response to the scene by our call firefighters, which contributed significantly to controlling the fire,” Chief Benoit said. “This call also serves as a strong reminder of the need for working smoke detectors, which provide valuable minutes that can save lives.
“I’d also like to remind residents to ensure that their chimneys are maintained and cleaned regularly to reduce the potential for a fire,“ Chief Benoit said.
