WAYLAND — Acting Chief Ed Burman is pleased to share that the Wayland Police Department promoted three officers to the ranks of sergeant and acting sergeant this week.

“I hope this is the beginning of advancement for our department and for these three officers. I hope it is the first of many advances for them and others within our police department,” said Acting Chief Burman. “I encourage these officers to continue their education, which will help them become leaders not only within our police department and the community we serve, but leaders within the law enforcement profession as well.”

Sgt. Tyler Castagno

Sgt. Castagno joined the Wayland Police Department as an auxiliary police officer and dispatcher in 2006, and in 2007 was hired as a full-time police officer. He attended the MBTA Transit Police Academy in Quincy.

In 2012, Sgt. Castagno was recognized with the Mothers Against Drunk Driving Award for making 21 drunk driving arrests in a calendar year. He also received the Life Saving Award from the City of Newton.

In 2016, Sgt. Castagno became a detective for the Wayland Police Department and took on a volunteer role as a member of the Youth Advisory Committee. Sgt. Castagno is a certified Firearms, Taser and Investigations instructor for the Municipal Police Training Committee.

Off duty, Sgt. Castagno enjoys spending time with his two children, Avery and Joey, and his wife Claire. He is a long-time youth sports coach, as well as a lifelong Wayland resident.

Acting Sgt. Justen Kazan

Acting Sgt. Kazan joined the Wayland Police Department in 2015. He serves as a member of the Honor Guard and the Metropolitan Law Enforcement Council SWAT team.

He is a field training officer, working directly with new officers in the department.

Prior to becoming a police officer, Acting Sgt. Kazan served in the United States Marine Corps Reserves and was deployed to Afghanistan in 2011. While in the Marines, he received several medals and commendations, including a Combat Action Ribbon and a Purple Heart.

Acting Sgt. Kazan has a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Bridgewater State University, and is working toward a Master’s Degree from Southern New Hampshire University.

Acting Sgt. Kazan’s family includes his wife, Taryn, three children, Olivia, Joseph and Noah, and his parents.

Acting Sgt. Lynnet Sloan

Acting Sgt. Sloan joined the Wayland Police Department in 2011. She attended the MBTA Transit Police Academy.

Acting Sgt. Sloan has worked as a patrol officer on the 3-11 shift, and is also a field training officer, car seat technician, and has experience working as a school resource officer. She serves on the Honor Guard, and is a member of the Metropolitan Law Enforcement Council Critical Incident Stress Management Team. She has served as president of the Wayland Police Association for the past nine years, and runs an annual charity golf tournament.

Recently, Acting Sgt. Sloan worked with the Wayland Historical Society, town archeologist, residents, and a member of the Hassanamisco Band of Nipmucs to redesign the police department’s badge.

Acting Sgt. Sloan has an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice, and is working toward a Bachelor’s Degree.
