MEDWAY — Superintendent Armand Pires and Principal John Murray are pleased to announce that two Medway High School students have been awarded The New England School Development Council (NESDEC) Award for Academic Growth and Student Leadership in Learning.

The award was given to seniors Meredith O’Mara and Luke Frauton in recognition of their academic achievements and accomplishments in their high school years. Both students met the award criteria of pursuing a high level of academic achievement, serving as a positive role model for the student body and exemplifying admirable character and accomplishment.

O’Mara and Frauton were recognized at the Medway School Committee meeting on Thursday, Dec. 15.

“Meredith and Luke have worked hard to progress academically and achieve success during their time at Medway High School,” Principal Murray said. “In addition to their academic achievements, both students have also shown great commitment to contributing positively to our school community, both inside and outside of the classroom.”

Meredith O’Mara

O’Mara is a dedicated student with ambitions to become a nurse. She has followed the school’s Biomedical Pathway in which she has acquired skills used by professionals in hospitals and labs, and has taken multiple Advanced Placement courses.

O’Mara is a member of the National Honor Society, an officer for the Best Buddies Program and a Peer Counselor. She is additionally a three-time consecutive recipient of the Scholastic Award and a recipient of the Lasell Book Award.

She is an accomplished student-athlete participating in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track. She is a captain for both the cross country and indoor track teams.

Outside of school, O’Mara serves as a summer camp counselor, as well as a camp counselor-in-training and leader in training at the Mass Audubon Stony Brook Wildlife Sanctuary.

She is described as someone who embodies strength, perseverance and grace, and always demonstrates a high degree of effort in and dedication to all that she does.

Luke Frauton

Frauton is described as a student who leads by example and is compassionate toward others, with a positive attitude and hardworking nature. He is dedicated to his academics and committed to the organizations and charities he is involved in, including SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) and Relay For Life.

While attending Medway High School, Frauton has challenged himself academically by taking nine Advanced Placement courses and 10 Honors courses. He has a passion for math and looks forward to exploring career options in math or business in college.

Frauton is also an accomplished student-athlete participating in football, baseball and hockey. He is a captain for all three teams and shares his passion for sports with others through coaching.
