HAMPTON — Superintendent Dr. Lois Costa is pleased to announce that the Hampton School District organized Thanksgiving meal baskets for families in need for the third year in a row.
About 28 families, representing approximately 60 students, stopped by the Hampton Community Coalition on High Street for curbside pickup of a Thanksgiving meal basket on Tuesday, Nov. 22.
Several area businesses and organizations donated food and other items for the baskets, including Hampton Community Coalition, WHYM, Hampton Academy, Ardent Concepts and private donors. Students at Hampton Academy could donate canned and non-perishable items in homeroom.
“Community members have been extremely supportive of this initiative over the past several years and once again we are humbled by their generosity,” said Superintendent Costa. “Thank you to everyone involved and all who donated for helping to make this Thanksgiving a special one for so many families from our community.”
Baskets feature items, including boxed mashed potatoes, canned vegetables, macaroni and cheese, and other canned goods. Families were also given a coupon for Hannaford in Hampton to pick up a turkey or ham at no cost.
This initiative was planned and coordinated by Social Worker Emily Fixler, Spanish Teacher Christina Coffill and Math Teacher Felicia Formisano. Members of Helping Hampton Student Committee prepared and packaged the baskets.
“Supporting families during the holiday season and throughout the entire year is very important to us and we want all families in need to know that we are here for them always,” said Fixler. “We are happy to be able to provide families a good Thanksgiving meal with support from so many in the community.”
The Hampton Fire Department also was in attendance to distribute winter jackets to students through their Operation Warm initiative.
Helping Hampton Student Committee is a student-run organization advised by Coffill and Formisano that aims to find ways to volunteer and assist the community throughout the year.
