BOURNE — Bourne High School is excited to be hosting the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education’s Safe Schools Regional Leadership meeting for the very first time.
The event is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 6 in the Bourne High School library.
It is expected that approximately five schools from the Bourne area will attend with about 60 attendees, including chaperones. The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education will provide students with lunch.
Bourne High School, via BHS’s Gender Sexuality Alliance (GSA) advisor, Elizabeth Sylvia, will be hosting this event to be a welcoming community for all students. The meeting will be a great opportunity for students in any under-represented groups to build community across towns and schools.
“The event will be an empowering meeting for students and will contribute to creating the strong social bonds that are so important to adolescent development,” said Sylvia. “It is meetings like these that help students feel seen and cared for.”
Throughout the year, Bourne High School works to create a fun and inclusive space for students as they develop their identities and our activities center those goals. The GSA welcomes all students in a non-judgmental environment, regardless of orientation.
The GSA Student Leadership Council creates and informs policy, promotes inclusive learning environments for all students, supports the development of leadership skills, and fosters statewide collaboration among LGBTQ students and allies. Members of the GSA Student Leadership Council develop and implement projects designed to make change in local schools, districts, and regions. The GSA Student Leadership Council consists of a state council and five region-based councils. During the 2022-2023 school year, all state and regional council meetings take place bi-monthly in person.
“I think this is a great opportunity for our students and school,” said Principal Amy Cetner. “We are more than happy to open our doors, and school, to our neighboring schools to support this worthwhile event!”
