Girls Team Takes Sixth, Best in School History
ENFIELD — Superintendent Amanda Isabelle proudly shares that the Indian River Middle School Boys Cross Country Team has won the Division 3 State Championship for the second time.
Indian River competed against 18 other schools at Coe Brown Academy on Saturday, Oct. 23. Indian River won its first Divisional title in 2019.
A number of Indian River runners had strong performances. Karson Rogers was the top Indian River runner, finishing sixth in the field of 134 with a time of 12:12 for the two-mile course. Also contributing were Carl Russell (10th), Alex Deserranno (12th), Reece Yorke (18th), Nic DeFelice (38th), Ian Massecar (47th), and Matthew Tourville (109th).
“We knew the boys were a favorite to win States, but that comes with a lot of pressure and they didn’t let it get to them,” said Rick Currier, who coaches with Jeremy Hatch. “It’s not easy when the bar is set high, but they absolutely delivered.”
The Cross Country program runs in September and October, with student-athletes in Grades 5-8.
The school’s Girls Cross Country Team had a record performance as well, finishing sixth overall. The Girls Team hadnever finished higher than 15th.
Montana Ballard finished with the team’s best time with 14:28 for two miles, ending in 19th out of 114 runners. Other strong performances were turned in by Tori Petty (20th), Maddy Song (51st), Paige Reney (52nd), Izzy Currier (67th), Layla Hatch (91st), and Grace King (103rd). Maddy, Paige, and Grace are fifth-grade students, a sign that the team will continue to perform at a high level in the future.
“I felt if everyone really clicked they could finish as high as eighth. They exceeded all expectations when those results came in and we found out they finished sixth,” Currier said. “I couldn’t be more proud of both teams, it was a incredible day to cap off a great season”.
“The Mascoma community is very proud of all of our cross-country student-athletes, and congratulate them, Coach Currier and Coach Hatch,” Superintendent Isabelle said. “Their practice and dedication truly showed.”
