SOMERSET — The following is a statement from Somerset Police Chief Todd Costa:
“On behalf of the Somerset Police Department, I would like to extend our sincerest thoughts and condolences to our brothers and sisters at the Bristol, Connecticut Police Department and the greater Bristol community.
“We join in the collective mourning of Bristol Police Sgt. Dustin Demonte and Officer Alex Hamzy who were shot and killed in the line of duty, and wish Officer Alec Iurato, who was shot and seriously injured, well in his recovery.
“While all line-of-duty deaths and injuries are difficult to hear about, this incident hits particularly close to home as one of our officers hails from the Bristol community and previously served as a member of the Bristol Police Department.
“The men and women of the Somerset Police Department proudly stand behind the members of Bristol Police Department in this most difficult of times. In honor of Sgt. Demonte and Officer Hamzy, we will be conducting a period of mourning effective 4 p.m. today, Oct. 13, until 12 a.m. on the day following their respective burials.
“During our period of mourning, Somerset Police will be wearing solid black bands on their badges symbolic of our collective mourning and in support of the Bristol community.
“We ask that the Somerset community joins us in keeping their family, friends, and members of the Bristol Police Department in your thoughts and prayers during this time.”
