NEWPORT COUNTY — The Police Departments of Newport County, in conjunction with the Rhode Island Police Chiefs’ Association, would like to share the results of the departments’ enhanced DUI patrols conducted over Labor Day weekend.
The campaign ran from Sept. 1 through Sept. 5. The Middletown, Newport, Portsmouth, Jamestown, Tiverton and Little Compton Police Departments, as well as the Rhode Island State Police participated in the campaign, in cooperation with RIPCA and the Rhode Island Office on Highway Safety.
Police officers from neighboring jurisdictions partnered together and conducted proactive motor vehicle enforcement throughout the weekend in an effort to prevent alcohol and drug-related crashes.
As a result of the collaborative Labor Day weekend effort, the police departments of Newport County:
- made 16 total arrests for Driving Under the Influence,
- conducted 279 motor vehicle stops,
- issued 39 traffic citations, and
- gave 240 warnings.
There were no reported motor vehicle crashes with injuries as the result of an intoxicated driver, and no traffic fatalities over Labor Day weekend countywide.
Newport County Police Departments will continue to be proactive in their efforts to reduce crashes within their respective communities.
