GEORGETOWN – The Georgetown Fire and Police Departments invite the community to attend a remembrance ceremony marking the 21st anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
WHEN:
Sunday, Sept. 11, beginning at 8:30 a.m.
WHERE:
Outside of the Georgetown Public Safety Building, 47 Central St.
WHAT:
The event will feature speakers from the Police and Fire Departments, prayers from local clergy and a moment of silence for those lost in the attacks, as well as those lost to the impacts of working at Ground Zero in the weeks after.
Additionally, as a way to pass down history and to never forget Sept. 11, the Police and Fire Departments have invited students from Georgetown Public Schools to participate in the ceremony this year.
“We are proud to continue the tradition of honoring the victims of 9/11 and carrying on the legacy of the brave first responders and heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice on that day,” Acting Fire Chief Chuck Savage said. “Remembrance ceremonies like this are a powerful way to ensure that younger generations never forget the impact, sacrifices and lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001. We are grateful to have so many students involved this year.”
Students will be involved in a variety of ways including assisting in raising/lowering the flag, placing the memorial wreath, ringing the bell, reading passages and more.
“It is up to us to never forget the events of Sept.11, 2001, and to instill this sentiment in the hearts and minds of Americans who have been born since the attacks occurred,” Police Chief Donald Cudmore said. “We look forward to joining community members of all ages at this important ceremony to honor all those that were lost on that fateful day.”
