WAYLAND — Director Julia Junghanns reports that the Wayland Health Department has declared a Public Health Advisory following reports of cyanobacteria in North Pond area of Lake Cochituate.

The Department of Conservation and Recreation received visual evidence that indicate a presence of cyanobacteria in the North Pond. Cyanobacteria is a blue-green algae that can be unsafe to humans and pets.

The state Department of Public Health will conduct confirmatory sampling on Monday, Aug. 1 at the following locations:

The water is currently declared unsafe for people and pets. Residents are advised not to swim in North Pond or swallow the water. Residents should rinse off immediately if they come into contact with the water.

Warning signs will be posted at accesses to North Pond.

The Wayland Health Department will provide updates when new information is available from the state.
