BOURNE — From health and wellness exercises to learning the ins and outs of musical theater, Bourne Public Schools is offering a wide selection of enrichment programs to students this summer.
The BPS Summer Enrichment Program is off to a successful start, providing a safe, engaging and enriching environment for students of all ages, from incoming kindergarten students to those entering grade 12.
The enrichment program is the first to occur in Bourne in quite some time. The program is offering six enrichment courses that currently serve approximately 70 students. Elementary level courses run for two weeks, and secondary level courses run for four weeks.
“Bourne Schools have so many hands-on enrichment opportunities during the school year and we are thrilled to offer an extension of these activities during the summer,” Superintendent Kerri Anne Quinlan-Zhou said. “These programs are a great way for students to spark their creativity, connect with others and learn from passionate educators.”
The BPS Summer Enrichment Program, much like the BPS Academy Program, was bolstered by Bourne High School students engaged in the High School Senior Internship Education Project (HSSIEP). These interns engaged with teachers and students in everything from tie-dying shirts to playing at a jazz concert. HSSIEP is a Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) funded program that is supported by the Cape Cod Workforce Board. It offers interested students a variety of opportunities to explore careers in education while getting paid. Bourne High School’s HSSIEP students, under the direction of BHS teacher Mrs. Ann Marie Strode, were great contributors to enrichment classes.
Enrichment opportunities include the following:

BES Steam Summer Over the Rainbow:

BIS All That Jazz:
This enrichment course is for students currently in grades 3-5 and is taught by Dr. Michael Smith. Students will play and sing a repertoire of jazz tunes. The students who are completing a year of instrumental study in grade 5 will play and improvise on each of the songs selected. Students in grades 3-4 will participate vocally in addition to playing bells and recorders. All students will also participate in an African Drum Circle utilizing the newly acquired djembes.
The final project will be an informal concert in the garden area. Most of the instruction will take place in the garden area behind the school; during breaks students will do a little gardening while listening to a variety of jazz styles.
BHS & BMS Musical Theater Workshop:
Taught by Mrs. Rebecca Salgado, this enrichment course is for rising grade 7-12 students. In four short weeks, participants will have a blast singing and dancing their way through all aspects of musical production.
In addition to song and dance, students will learn about costuming, make-up, set design, and set construction while collaborating on a musical revue. Participants, as well as their families, will enjoy a culminating performance to demonstrate their talents.
BHS & BMS Playmaking Workshop:
In this Playmaking workshop, students will explore the world of theater through improvisation, acting, writing, scene creation, and adaptations. Students will learn from Ms. Keri Boisclair and work together to develop original characters and stories for the stage, while continuing to explore the elements of acting and playwriting.
Students entering grades 7-9 who love to act, write, create stories or learn about theater in general are encouraged to attend. No previous theater experience is necessary in order to join in the fun.
The Playmaking workshop will end with a showcase for families on the last day of the program.
