NORTH KINGSTOWN – The Rhode Island Police Chiefs’ Association will join a press conference tomorrow to discuss safe driving and enhanced DUI patrol activity statewide ahead of the Fourth of July holiday.
WHEN:
Friday, July 1 at 10 a.m.
WHERE:
North Kingstown Senior Center, 100 Beach St., North Kingstown
WHO:
- Sean Corrigan, RIPCA President, Narragansett Police Chief
- Lloyd Albert, Senior Vice President AAA Northeast
- Capt. David Bassignani, Rhode Island State Police
- Lt. Donald Barrington, North Kingstown Police Department
WHAT:
Rhode Island’s state and local police are working with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) urging drivers to plan ahead for a sober ride. According to the NHTSA, over 12,000 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes that involved an alcohol-impaired driver in 2021. That same year, over 500 people died in motor vehicle traffic crashes over the July 4th holiday period (6 p.m. July 2 to 5:59 a.m. July 6).
Friday’s press conference will serve as an opportunity for law enforcement and highway safety officials to raise awareness of the importance of safe and sober driving this weekend, and inform the public of enhanced impaired driving patrols statewide.
Over the holiday weekend, law enforcement agencies across the state will be participating in the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over impaired driving awareness campaign. Officers will be patrolling the roadways looking for signs of impaired drivers and agencies will be deploying Drug Recognition Experts who will monitor the roads for drivers operating under the influence of cannabis.
DUI enforcement cruisers are also expected to be present at the event.
