EAST BRIDGEWATER — Chief Paul O’Brien announces the East Bridgewater Police Department will be hosting a R.A.D. (Rape Aggression Defense) class in town later this summer.

The class will consist of eight hours of self-defense lessons that teach valuable techniques for defending oneself in a threatening situation.

R.A.D. is a hands-on class with the option of participating in a simulation exercise on the last day. The exercise allows students to use the skills they have learned to fight off an attacker.

Any female over the age of 12 is welcome to attend the class and no experience is needed. This class is strictly offered to females only, as many of these crimes reported are against females. Assaults on males are generally very different from assaults on females, and since the program deals specifically with defense against abduction for the purpose of rape, instructors focus on how women are attacked.

“This class is a great opportunity for any females going off to college, females working in the city, or any female who is looking for some basic lessons on how to defend herself,” Chief O’Brien said.

The entire program will consist of four classes on the following days:

  • Tuesday, Aug. 2
  • Tuesday, Aug. 9
  • Tuesday, Aug. 16
  • Tuesday, Aug. 23

All classes will be held at the East Bridgewater Junior/Senior High School in the Gymnasium from 6-8:30 p.m. It is recommended to wear sneakers and comfortable/athletic clothing.

The East Bridgewater Police Department is hosting this class free of charge to the community.

Anyone interested in registering for the class or who has questions can email East Bridgewater Police Detective Cecelia Cacciatore at CCacciatore@ebmass.com. If formally registering for the class, please include your full name, age and phone number in the email.

The deadline to register is July 22.
