WAKEFIELD — Superintendent of Schools Douglas Lyons and Fire Chief Michael Sullivan wish to extend their gratitude to a member of Wakefield Public Schools’ custodial staff for his quick actions in extinguishing a vehicle fire at the Woodville School this morning.
At about 8:20 a.m. today, during drop-off at the Woodville School, a vehicle in line began to show smoke and subsequently caught fire. Woodville Custodian Martin Walshacted quickly and climbed underneath the vehicle — a vintage Volkswagen bus — to extinguish the flames. Nobody inside the vehicle was injured.
“This was a potentially dangerous situation, given the way our drop-off loop is designed, but Martin’s selfless actions prevented this incident from escalating. I want to thank him for his efforts to protect the individual inside the vehicle and all those around it this morning,” Superintendent Lyons said.
The Wakefield Fire Department responded to the scene as well and ensured the fire was fully extinguished.
