HAVERHILL – Superintendent Maureen Lynch is pleased to announce that Whittier Tech sophomore Jeremy Alvarez of Haverhill attended the MassSTAR Citizenship Conference sponsored by the Massachusetts Youth Leadership Foundation earlier this month.

The conference, which was held from June 3-5 at Lasell University, included programming that challenged students across the state to broaden their perspectives and bring out their inner leaders. Alvarez participated in works shops, group learning activities, team building activities and intensive small group discussions.

Alvarez particularly enjoyed one activity in which students had to work as a team to cross a simulated river. Students had to use their communication skills to successfully complete the challenge and reach the other side.

“The river activity taught us to work together with one another to reach our shared goals,” Alvarez said. “Overall, I really enjoyed meeting students from across the state who share similar experiences as me.”

Alvarez was nominated for this free conference by Guidance Counselor Rachael Rossi based on his demonstrated and potential leadership skills.

“Jeremy always puts his full effort into learning and understanding various topics,” said Maggie McDonald, Mathematics Department Chair and Instructor. “He is determined to master skills and be ahead of his peers so that in turn he can help them in the classroom. He is a great leader in our classroom and school and I am glad he was given the opportunity to learn at MassSTAR.”

Alvarez studies Electrical at Whittier Tech, and is a member of the Multicultural and Chess Clubs and the soccer team. He also serves as a tour guide during open houses.

His guidance counselors and instructors agree that Alvarez has a great work ethic and goes out of his way to lend a helping hand, which is supported by his positive attitude. Alvarez was honored as the Whitter Tech Student of the Month in November for these qualities.

“I am confident that Jeremy learned many new leadership skills while honing his existing skills during this conference,” Superintendent Lynch said. “This knowledge will serve him well throughout his time at Whittier Tech and beyond the classroom, too.”
