CANTON — Superintendent Jill Rossetti and Principal Geoffrey Zini are pleased to announce the graduation of 210 students from Blue Hills Regional Technical School.
The graduation ceremony took place on Tuesday, June 7 at the Blue Hills Regional Technical School Turf Field. District School Committee Chairman Eric Erskine welcomed graduates and their families.
Addressing graduates, Superintendent Rossetti acknowledged how they exhibited kindness where ever they went, and how they made Blue Hills feel like home to other students.
“This is one the best classes I have ever seen at Blue Hills. You made others feel welcome by happily bringing them into your circle. You extended your kindness to them because you wanted to, not because we told you to. That is an achievement to be very proud of,” said Superintendent Rossetti. “Warriors always do the right thing even when no one is watching. You have made us all very proud.”
Principal Zini commended graduates on their maturity and how well they carried themselves during their time at Blue Hills, especially when returning to school during the COVID-19 pandemic: “You are a class that will not be forgotten. You’ve helped us resurrect our Homecoming and Prom; normal lunch routines; athletic events; the senior art show; and smiling again at one another! And through all of it, you have taken the changes, challenges, and frustrations with a maturity that will serve you well in your next adventure.”
Co-Valedictorian Ryan Smaller spoke about his experiences at Blue Hills, where he faced hardships his first few years for being labeled the “smart guy.” He discussed how he also was the shy, introverted kid trying to find his place. Smaller credited his teachers, peers and everyone he got to know, for both his personal success and for the success of the Class of 2022.
“More importantly, though, thank you for seeing that we are not just students. We are BHR vocational students who are going off into the military, college, and even immediately into lifetime careers. I am proud to stand in front of my friends, the Class of 2022. We are all ‘the smart guys,’ ‘the nerds,’ ‘the robots,’ ‘the shy guys,’ but we
do so proudly, and as the valedictorians of our own futures.”
Co-Valedictorian Kyle Grosso spoke to his peers about not being afraid to fail while they head into the next chapter of their lives.
“To all of the class of 2022, risk some failure in the next few years. Don’t be afraid of it, and don’t doubt your abilities in any area even slightly. We’ve pushed through so much already, to the point where your diploma has become symbolic of an absolute victory against intense adversity,” he said. “If we can claim this victory, we can claim many, many more. There is nowhere for any of us to go but onwards and upwards.”
Class President Noel Hill gave a farewell address discussing the end of their journeys, and a reminder to his fellow students that love is often the answer.
“Today, a big, bold Sharpie marker on the timeline of life marks the conclusion of our high school careers. But that mark also indicates the beginning of the infinite possibilities lying beyond the other end of this stage. But how you respond to what happens next, is up to you,” said Hill. “So go out there, persist in all that you do. Give something for the next generation to be proud of. And lastly, learn to love everyone until it hurts, because when everything hurts, all that will fix it is love.”
Diplomas were awarded by Superintendent Rossetti and Chairman Erskine. Class Vice President Temia Murray presented the class gift which included the donation of excess funds from the senior class to the underclassmen.
Also attending were Dean of Students Thomas Cavanaugh, Academic Director Paul Bavuso, Director of Vocational Programs Michelle Sylvia, Director of Special Services Angelo Dimitriou, Cooperative Education Coordinator Kimberly Poliseno, and Senator Walter Timilty.
Members of the Blue Hills Regional Vocational District School Committee were also in attendance including Chairman Eric Erskine of Braintree, Vice Chairman Kevin Connolly of Norwood, Committee Member Tom Polito of Dedham, Committee Member Taryn Mohan of Holbrook and Committee Member Sheila Vazquez of Westwood.
