WHITMAN — Chief Timothy Clancy reports that the Whitman Fire Department extinguished a fire this morning at a commercial building on Commercial Street.
At approximately 9:50 a.m. Wednesday, Whitman Fire received a call for a fire at a commercial building located at 205 Commercial St.
Upon arrival firefighters saw smoke showing from the one-story building, which is occupied by Dimark Incorporated, a local fabrication shop. All occupants of the building were in the process of being evacuated when firefighters arrived on scene.
The fire was found to be in the dust collector of a metal sanding machine. Extinguishment was hindered by the presence of a magnesium component to the shavings and dust in the machine.
The fire was extinguished with dry chemical extinguishers and the machine was removed from the building. An extensive amount of smoke removal was required to fully clear the building.
Damage to the building is estimated to be $20,000, including the damaged equipment and smoke damage to the building.
All units cleared the scene by 11:48 a.m. No injuries were reported as a result of the fire.
Whitman Fire was assisted on scene by the East Bridgewater Fire Department, and the Hanson Fire Department provided station coverage. National Grid and the Town of Whitman wire inspector also responded to the scene.
Chief Clancy, who served as incident commander, wishes to acknowledge the work of Whitman firefighters in extinguishing the fire despite the complicated conditions, as well as neighboring departments for offering their assistance.
