PLAINVILLE — Fire Chief Richard Ball reports that the Plainville Fire Department extinguished a mulch fire that spread to two units at a townhouse condominium complex late Tuesday night.
At approximately 11:45 p.m. on Tuesday, June 7, Plainville firefighters responded to 6 Messenger St. for a report of a mulch fire.
Upon arrival, firefighters discovered heavy fire and smoke showing from units 5 and 6 of the 10-unit townhouse condominium complex. All residents from units 1-10 were able to make it safely out of the building.
Firefighters began an aggressive exterior attack to knock down the heavy flames. A short while later firefighters began an interior attack on the fire, but they were eventually forced by fire conditions to exit the home and fight the fire from the exterior once more.
A fourth alarm was struck for additional manpower.
The fire was under control by about 1 a.m., but companies are expected to remain on scene for hours overhauling the building.
One individual was transported from the scene for stress-related injuries.
The two units sustained extensive structural damage. All residents of the 10 units are displaced by the fire due to electrical damages. The American Red Cross of Massachusetts was notified to provide assistance to those families.
Wrentham, Foxboro, North Attleboro, Franklin, Walpole, Sharon, Norton, Mansfield, Attleboro, Mansfield EMA, Bellingham EMS and Cumberland, Rhode Island provided mutual aid at the scene. Easton Fire provided station coverage.
National Grid and Liberty Utilities also responded to the scene to turn off the utilities.
The origin and cause of the fire are being jointly investigated by Plainville FD and the State Police Fire & Explosion Investigation Unit assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s office.
