CANTON — Superintendent Derek Folan and World Languages Coordinator Heidi Olson are pleased to report that the Canton Public Schools held its annual World Languages Department student recognition night recently, honoring students from both the Galvin Middle School and Canton High School.
The event was held Thursday, May 19 at the Canton High School auditorium.
The event began with opening remarks from Superintendent Folan, Canton School Committee member Laura Arboleda, Canton High School Principal Jeffrey Sperling and Interim Galvin Middle School Principal Dr. Michael Green.
“The students honored as part of our annual world language student recognition night have worked incredibly hard to achieve academic success and a deep understanding of their respective languages,” Coordinator Olson said. “It is great to be able to come together in person and recognize these middle school and high school students for all they have achieved, and also to acknowledge the work of all of their teachers and family members for helping each student get to where they are.”

The Massachusetts State Seal of Biliteracy is an award provided by state-approved districts that recognizes high school graduates who attain high functional and academic levels of proficiency in English and a world language in recognition of having studied and attained proficiency in two or more languages by high school graduation. The award takes the form of a seal that appears on the transcript or diploma of the graduating senior and is a statement of accomplishment for future employers and for college admissions.
Students who earn the Seal of Biliteracy were awarded a voucher to take a Massachusetts Test for Educator Licensure (MTEL) at no cost, encouraging them to use their advanced skills to pursue a career in education. The award can be used toward either the Communication and Literacy MTEL or the Bilingual Education MTEL.
In addition to recognizing students for earning the Massachusetts State Seal of Biliteracy, the World Languages Department student recognition night also highlighted Galvin Middle School and Canton High School students for achieving a wide range of language-related awards and recognitions.
