NEWPORT — Chief Travis Bingham reports that the Newport Police Department charged a woman with attempting to burglarize a bank deposit box and bank, and with assaulting an officer who attempted to arrest her.

STEPHANIE FOSTER, AGE 30, OF NEWPORT, was arrested and charged with:

  • Attempted Burglary
  • Unlawful Mischief
  • Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer
  • Resisting Arrest

On Saturday, May 28, at approximately 8:20 a.m., Newport Police received a report that a deposit box at the Community National Bank, 100 Main St., Newport, had been vandalized.

A review of security camera footage from the previous night showed an individual later identified as FOSTER attempting to forcibly access the bank’s front door and an ATM machine in the bank’s lobby, as well as the deposit box, at one point pulling a metal casing around the deposit drawer away from the wall. Investigators found blood and fingerprints on the metal casing of the deposit drawer.

An investigation identified FOSTER as the woman in security footage, and on Saturday, May 28 at approximately 3 p.m., Newport Police went to FOSTER‘s home to speak with her about the incident. When police attempted to take FOSTER into custody, she forcibly resisted and kicked an officer in the chest during a struggle. FOSTER declined medical attention following her arrest. The officer was not injured.

FOSTER is known to Newport Police and was on probation at the time of her arrest, so she was turned over to the custody of Newport Probation and Parole and held at the Northern State Correctional Facility.

FOSTER is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, May 31.

These are allegations. All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty.
