WOBURN – Superintendent Matthew Crowley and Principal Linda Riley are pleased to share that Woburn Public Schools’ Altavesta Elementary held an event to promote the importance of literacy centered around the theme of camp last week.
Students, staff, parents, and community members attended Camp All-Star Literacy Night on Thursday, May 12.
More than 100 students gathered outside around a life-like campfire to listen to stories about royalty and animals told by Big Joe the Storyteller. At the same time, parents gathered in the cafeteria for a presentation by Principal Riley on the importance and impact of reading.
Students and parents participated in engaging literacy games and activities later in the night, including bingo and board games, created by all of the Altavesta classroom teachers. Food and refreshments also were provided.
Literacy Connection Planner Christy Nickerson provided students in attendance with backpacks filled with materials to support literacy at home, including a bookmark and literacy-based games.
Representatives from the Boys and Girls Club of Woburn, Woburn Recreation, YMCA, and Woburn Public Library, attended and shared information about summer learning opportunities for students.
“This was the first time that we held an event like this and it was a great success. The event was made possible only through the hard work and dedication of the Altavesta staff, students, families, and community. Thank you to everyone who supported our effort of promoting the importance of reading and literacy,” Principal Riley said.
