WHITMAN — Chief Timothy Clancy is pleased to recognize the men and women of the Whitman Fire Department as part of International Firefighters Day.
International Firefighters Day, celebrated each year on May 4, is a way to say thank you to firefighters around the world for all that they do to keep their communities safe.
Born out of the tragic loss of five firefighters in a wildfire in Victoria, Australia in 1999, International Firefighters Day honors their lives and the sacrifices that firefighters everywhere are willing to make as part of their job.
“The men and women of our department come into work every day and accept any challenges presented to ensure that the needs of our community members are met,” Chief Clancy said. “In honor of International Firefighters Day, I would like to recognize and commend our firefighters and the sacrifices they make every day.”
The U.S.-based National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) commemorates the day with activities that celebrate and show appreciation for the work of firefighters everywhere.
Chief Clancy encourages Whitman residents to light their homes in red on May 4-5 by changing their porch lights and sharing their stories on social media using the hashtag #ShineYourLight4Firefighters as a way to honor firefighters as part of International Firefighters Day.
