CHELMSFORD — Chief James M. Spinney reports that the Chelmsford Police Department is investigating multiple thefts of catalytic converters from vehicles in the past month, and offering residents tips to help prevent such thefts.
Between February 18 and May 4, the Chelmsford Police Department received reports of catalytic converters being stolen from properties on Stedman Street, Alpha Road, Middlesex Street, Industrial Avenue, Groton Road and Billerica Road.
Three of the thefts were reported at the Chelmsford Senior Center, where town-owned transport vans were targeted.
“Catalytic converters are expensive to replace, and unfortunately that means these thefts can have a significant financial impact on families, and especially those who are on fixed incomes,” said Chief Spinney. “I want to assure residents that the Chelmsford Police Department is investigating these thefts thoroughly, and working with law enforcement partners to monitor and respond to crime trends like this.”
The thefts come as police departments across the state have seen increasing numbers of these thefts, in part because catalytic converters contain small amounts of precious metals such as platinum that have increased in value.
In response to the increase in such thefts, Chelmsford Police would like to provide the following tips:
- Park in well-lit areas.
- Park close to building entrances or the nearest road in public parking lots. This leaves your vehicle in a location where many people can see it.
- If you have a personal or shared garage, keep your vehicle parked inside with the door shut.
- Add video surveillance to the area where you regularly park your vehicle.
- Install a catalytic converter-specific security device, such as an aluminum plate that, once installed, can provide a strong barrier against theft.
- Adjust the security system on your vehicle, if already installed, to activate from vibrations, such as those produced by a saw.
- Remember to call the police and report where your car was parked when your catalytic converter was stolen. Provide as many identifying details that you can, including the time when the theft most likely occurred.
“Residents who stay alert for suspicious activity in their neighborhoods are one of our strongest tools for preventing and responding to crime, and I would like to encourage all Chelmsford residents to contact us immediately if they see something they believe is suspicious,” said Chief Spinney. “Working together as a community helps keep all of us more safe.”
Chelmsford Police are asking anyone with information on the thefts to call 978-256-2521.
