MARION — Superintendent Michael S. Nelson and Marion Police Chief Richard B. Nighelli report that a threatening phone call was received by the Sippican School on Wednesday.
At approximately 3:30 p.m. — after school had already ended for the day — a staff member at the Sippican School received a telephone call in which an individual made non-specific threats against the school.
School officials immediately contacted the Marion Police Department, and an investigation into the matter was launched.
Marion Police responded to the school to provide an immediate police presence out of an abundance of caution. There were still some students in the school as part of the school’s extended day program, so families of those students were notified and the students were picked up by their parents while police were still on scene.
Marion Police officers, with the assistance of Mattapoisett Police, also conducted a sweep of the building.
Marion Police do not believe there was any imminent threat to students or staff as a result of the call, however the district and police are treating the situation seriously, and an investigation into the matter is ongoing. Police are aware that schools in other communities in the region also received similar phone calls.
There are no plans to delay the start of school on Thursday, but there will be an additional police presence at the school out of an abundance of caution.
