CANTON — Superintendent Jill Rossetti and Principal Geoffrey Zini are pleased to announce that several John and Abigail Adams Scholarship recipients were recognized at a breakfast ceremony.

On Thursday, April 14, Blue Hills honored 28 BHR seniors at the John and Abigail Adams Scholarship Breakfast Ceremony which was organized and hosted by the Blue Hills guidance department.

At the ceremony, students were presented with their John and Abigail Adams Scholarship and keynote speaker Sen. Walter Timilty congratulated them on their exemplary performance on the MCAS. Also in attendance were Sen. Michael Brady; representatives William Driscoll, John Rogers and Paul McMurtry; and District School Committee members Sheila Vazquez, Tom Polito, Eric Erskine and Kevin Connolly.

The following Blue Hills seniors have earned an Adams Scholarship:

Jhocelin Allaico (Drafting/CAD), Anthony Apromollo (Information Support Services & Networking), Sean Bernyk (Engineering Technology), Jesseley Gomes (Health Assisting), Kyle Grosso (Legal & Protective Services), Liberty Hull (Legal & Protective Services), Zinan Ieng (Engineering Technology), Cidne Jackson (Graphic Communication), Michelle Kha (Health Assisting), Melanie Magoon (Health Assisting), Steve George (Metal Fabrication & Joining Technologies), Alyssa McCarthy (Health Assisting), Brendan McCormack (Electronics), Shane McDermott (Engineering Technology), Cara McFadden (Health Assisting), Elizabeth Moore (Engineering Technology), Christopher Morrill (Electronics), Temia Murray (Drafting/CAD), Coleman O’Brien (Design & Visual Communications), Kelly Pineda (Health Assisting), Alex Reyes (Engineering Technology), Devin Rideout (Legal & Protective Services), Nailah Rivera (Automotive Technology), Isabella Serret-Fernandez (Health Assisting), Ryan Smaller (Information Support Services & Networking), Domenic Spano (Legal & Protective Services), Thomas Taylor (Automotive Tehcnology) and Conor Zaferacopoulos (Legal & Protective Services)

This scholarship is available to students whose MCAS performance puts them in the top 25% of their district. To be eligible, students must either score Advanced on the English, Math and Science exams, or Advanced on one exam and High Proficient on the other two. Students take the MCAS tests in the spring of their sophomore year.

Recipients of the Adams Scholarship are granted a four-year scholarship upon their acceptance to a participating Massachusetts public institution of higher education, including the four undergraduate campuses of the University of Massachusetts, all nine state universities and all 15 community colleges. The exact amount of the Adams Scholarship will depend on the institution in which the student enrolls, but for full-time, in-state students, it currently averages:

  • At the undergraduate campuses of the University of Massachusetts: a credit of $1,575 per year toward total student charges
  • At the state universities: a credit of $1,036 per year toward total student charges
  • At the community colleges: a credit of $740 per year toward total student charges

“On behalf of all faculty and staff at Blue Hills, we would like to extend our congratulations to all 2022  John and Abigail Adams Scholarship recipients,” Principal Zini said. “Each student performed exceptionally well on MCAS testing, and this scholarship serves as an acknowledgment of all of their hard work and preparation. We ask that you join us all in recognizing their success.”

Students were joined by their families at the ceremony and enjoyed a delicious spread of cookies, muffins and fresh fruit prepared by Culinary students, as well as coffee and tea.
