MELROSE — The Melrose Police Department is pleased to announce that Lieutenant David Mackey has been promoted from sergeant.

Lieutenant Mackey was hired in April 1996 under a U.S. Department of Justice Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) hiring program, and graduated from the 4th MPOC Canton Police Academy in November 1996.

Lieutenant Mackey is an honored Veteran, serving in the National Guard, and a lifelong resident of the City of Melrose.

He obtained his undergraduate degree from UMass Amherst, and his Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Anna Maria College.

He has served in several supervisory positions with the department including, Patrol Officer, Patrol Supervisor and Shift Officer In Charge (OIC).

Lieutenant Mackey has been recognized for his exceptional conduct and outstanding service to the City of Melrose during his career.

“I congratulate Lieutenant Mackey on both his promotion and his successful career with the Melrose Police Department,” said Mayor Paul Brodeur. “Lieutenant Mackey has a reputation of being a true professional and loyal to the community he serves. I look forward to his leadership and wish him luck in his new role within the department.”

Lieutenant Mackey assumed his new position following a swearing-in ceremony on March 10.

“Lieutenant Mackey has been a dedicated and professional member of this Department for over 25 years. He has served his country, furthered his education, and has been a reliable member of the Melrose Police Department,” said Chief Lyle. “I take great pride in leading the exemplary men and women of the Melrose Police Department, and ask them to join me in offering congratulations to Lieutenant Mackey.”
