TEWKSBURY – Chief Ryan Columbus reports that the Tewksbury Police Department arrested a man wanted on an outstanding warrant, and additionally charged him with resisting arrest and assaulting police officers.
MICHAEL FULA, AGE 37, OF NO KNOWN ADDRESS, was charged with:
- Assault and Battery on a Police Officer
- Resisting Arrest
- Possession of a Class E substance
On Tuesday, March 29, Tewksbury Police detectives learned that FULA was staying at a hotel in Tewksbury and wanted on a default warrant. The warrant was issued by Essex Superior Court when FULA failed to appear in a cocaine trafficking case.
Detectives had evidence that led them to believe FULA was a flight risk, so they monitored a parking lot outside the hotel.
On Wednesday, March 30, detectives saw FULA enter the parking lot and get out of his vehicle at approximately 5:30 a.m.
Detective approached FULA, who ran away. FULA was caught a short distance away and struggled with officers, biting one officer on the left arm.
An officer deployed a Taser, but FULA continued to struggle for several minutes until officers were able to place him in handcuffs.
Two officers suffered injuries in the struggle, but were not transported to the hospital. FULA was taken to a local hospital for evaluation following his arrest.
During an inventory search of FULA‘s belongings, police located prescription medication that FULA did not have a prescription for.
FULA was arraigned Thursday in Lowell District Court.
These are allegations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty.
