SHREWSBURY — Chief James Vuona reports that the Shrewsbury Fire Department responded to and extinguished two working fires this week.
On Sunday, March 27, at approximately 9 p.m., a 911 call reported a kitchen fire in a single-family, Ranch-style home at 31 Tanager Drive.
Shrewsbury Firefighters responded and found smoke showing from the home’s exterior with flames visible in the kitchen.
The crew of Engine 2 stretched a hose line into the kitchen to knock down the flames while the crew of Engine 3 established a water supply. The fire was quickly knocked down, and damage contained to the area around the stove.
An investigation determined the cause of the fire was cooking oil igniting on the stove.
There were no reported injuries.

On Monday, March 28, at approximately 10:46 p.m., a 911 call reported a fire in a second-floor bedroom at 37 Shady Lane Ave.
Shrewsbury Firefighters responded and found heavy smoke showing from the outside of the home but no visible flames.
Firefighters searched the single-family home to ensure all residents were out and attacked the fire on the second floor, while other firefighters climbed onto the roof to ventilate the fire.
The home suffered heavy fire damage throughout the second floor, and smoke and water damage throughout. Both of the home’s residents, as well as two cats, were able to safely evacuate the home. There were no reported injuries.
The fire originated in a second-floor bedroom and is considered unintentional. The residents were displaced by the blaze.
Firefighters from Boylston, Northborough and Westborough provided mutual aid at the scene.
“I would like to thank our mutual aid partners for their reliable support and assistance,” said Chief Vuona. “I would also like to remind everyone that working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are the best way to protect yourself and your family from fire. Smoke detectors and CO alarms provide early notification to your family so all can escape safely if there is a fire or toxic gases in your home.”
