SOUTH EASTON — Superintendent Luis Lopes, Principal Leslie Weckesser and Vocational Supervisor Mary Kobey are pleased to share that a group of Southeastern students recently organized a week-long emotional wellness event called “Southeastern Smiles.”
Southeastern Smiles, which took place Feb. 14-18, was coordinated by 11 seniors in the Legal and Protective Services vocational program. They included Adryanna Werra, Dianalis Lugo-Cabrera, Emily Espinal, Mayorling Hernandez, Lourdiana Etienne, Chelsea Lopes, Ashley Hayward, Adriana Wuschke, Samantha Tweedy, Alexis Waugh and Madeline Hornung. The group was assisted by instructor Pam Olsen.
The seniors recognized the importance of spreading information on emotional and mental health wellness, and planned activities for the week to help everyone smile. Activities occurred each day during lunch periods to make people smile, including taking fun pictures with peers and Southeastern’s Hawk mascot, playing music and sharing goodies.
Quotes were also displayed on walls throughout the school letting students know that they are valued and encouraging them to spread happiness, believe in themselves, appreciate their journey and chase their dreams.
“These young women became inspired and created this week to simply spread smiles. They recognized that through the difficulties and stressors that can occur day to day, kindness, inclusion, dedication and fun are so important,” Olsen said. “I am beyond proud of the work that they have done and their unselfish dedication to creating a positive culture throughout the Southeastern community. I truly believe that they have inspired their peers to continue spreading kindness and smiles.”
The students, with assistance of adjustment counselor Kerri O’Malley, also created a resource card for students and staff. The card, “Hawk Helpful Connections,” offers contact information for help regarding bullying, mental health, substance use and more.
“This was a great event that added some fun and enthusiasm to the school day, and really helped to spread positive energy among our students,” Principal Weckesser said. “Thank you to the group of Legal and Protective Services seniors who organized the week, and to Pam and Kerri who assisted the students in preparing their various activities.”
