BLACKSTONE — Chief Gregory Gilmore is pleased to share that members of the Blackstone Police Department visited students in the Blackstone-Millville Regional School District yesterday as part of Read Across America.
Chief Gilmore and School Resource Officer David Laudon visited Millville and Blackstone elementary schools on Thursday as part of a Community Reading Day hosted by the schools for Read Across America. Chief Gilmore and SRO Laudon read to first grade and fifth grade classes.
“We were happy to visit and connect with our younger community members through yesterday’s community reading event, and I’d like to thank the school staff and administrators for hosting us,” Chief Gilmore said.
Among the books they read to the students were a children’s biography book, “Gordon Parks: How the Photographer Captured Black and White America,” by Carole Boston Weatherford, and “Rain Boy,” a book about kindness by Dylan Glynn.
The National Education Association’s “Read Across America” program is an annual reading motivation and awareness campaign that calls for children to celebrate reading. The theme of Read Across America’s 2022 campaign is “Create and Celebrate a Nation of Diverse Readers.” Schools, libraries and communities across the country recognize a weeklong celebration centered around March 2 (corresponding with Dr. Seuss’ birthday), with other programming throughout the year.
