OLD ORCHARD BEACH – Chief Dana Kelley is pleased to share that Sasha Morelli has joined the Old Orchard Beach Police Department as its first full-time Social Services Navigator, assisting community members in need of support.

Morelli joined the Department on Feb. 7 from the Maine Department of Health and Human Services, where she worked as a Child Protective Case Worker, and brings extensive experience in the areas of crisis intervention and family issues. Morelli obtained her bachelor’s degree from Purdue University Global.

Morelli will assume a range of responsibilities as Social Services Navigator:

  • Connecting community members with available local or state services, around issues such as mental health, substance misuse, domestic violence, sexual assault, bullying, or suicidal ideation.
  • Working with the local school district to ensure wellness and prevention education.
  • Working with the Town’s General Assistance Coordinator.
  • Working with Town departments to identify and assist residents in need.
  • Serving as a co-first responder with public-safety agencies when necessary.

Morelli considers the ability to spend time with residents in need and forging relationships as a key to success.

“Our officers are often taxed having to respond to multiple calls. It doesn’t always afford them the time to talk to people,” Morelli says. “I can reach someone at a different level, because it won’t be something that’s public. People may be more willing to open up to me.”

She hopes to forge a strong bond within the town’s senior population, a group that often faces significant issues regarding health and well-being.

“Some seniors you speak with, they are just scared,” she says. “I can speak with them, get the information and reach out to their families. Family members may not realize their loved ones are struggling.”

Morelli also sees her new position as a homecoming. She grew up in Old Orchard Beach, and worked as a dispatcher for the Department for 10 years.

“In just the first few weeks Sasha has made a significant contribution, showing the value of removing barriers to care and assistance,” Chief Kelley said. “This is the right resource at the right time for the Department and community.”

Those who would like to speak with Social Services Coordinator Sasha Morelli may call the Department at 207-934-4911.
