SOUTH EASTON — Superintendent Luis Lopes and Principal Leslie Weckesser are pleased to share the success of Southeastern students at this year’s science fair.
Southeastern Regional’s 10th Annual Independent Scientific Research Fair took place on Wednesday, Feb. 2 at the school. The fair was held during the school day and school staff members and teachers were invited to visit the fair to see the displayed projects.
The student participants are enrolled this year in either the earth and space science, biology, chemistry, physics or human body systems vocational programs. Participation was optional and students who took part in the fair are working toward earning honors level credit in their science course through Southeastern’s Deeper Learning initiative.
Projects were evaluated against a grading rubric and were scored by Southeastern staff who volunteered their time during the school day. Numerous teachers, school committee members, administrators, clerical staff, counselors, paraprofessionals and other staff members volunteered as judges.
Tiana Goncalves, a junior from Brockton, received the top score this year with her project, “Blue Ink Chromatography.”
The following are the top 10 scoring students:
- Goncalves, for “Blue Ink Chromatography”
- Ludiana Pires, sophomore from Brockton, for “How Does Water from 3 Towns Affect Plant Growth”
- Kyle Dickinson and Ridwan Hasan (partner project), freshmen from Mansfield and Brockton respectively, for “SET Grades”
- Andrianna Wilkinson, sophomore from Brockton, for “How Does Music Affect Heart Rate”
- Richard O’Neill, sophomore from Mansfield, for “Powered Pencils”
- Maripaz Urena-Ortiz, senior from Brockton, for “Rate of Water Absorption in Types of Wood”
- Isabella Walnista, sophomore from Mansfield, for “Strength of Straw Bridges”
- Kayla Barros, sophomore from Brockton, for “Pesticides and Plants”
- Delilah Justino, sophomore from Stoughton, for “Stain Removal Experiment”
- Satra Lefleur, junior from Brockton, for “Fruit Deterioration Rates”
The following students received Honorable Mention Awards:
- Kaitlyn Cunha, senior from Brockton, for “Water Impact on Seed Germination”
- Jonas Diedricksen, freshman from Stoughton, for “Insulation Efficiency”
- Fanny Benitez, sophomore from Brockton, for “How Music Affects Plant Growth”
- Kimleen Ira, freshman from Brockton, for “Baking Soda Impact on Plant Growth”

- Tyler Reidy, sophomore from Norton, for “How do Corporations Track our Data Online”
“The annual fair is an excellent opportunity for our science students to explore a scientific problem or process they’re interested in,” said Christine Garabedian, Biology & Earth/Space Science teacher. “Our students did a fantastic job with their projects this year, challenging themselves to solve problems and demonstrating their knowledge of scientific concepts. Congratulations to all of our top-scorers and Honorable Mention recipients. We would also like to express our sincere appreciation to everyone who attended the fair and assisted with scoring.”
Pires, Dickinson and Hasan, O’Neill, Walnista and Barros are also being encouraged to participate in the Bridgewater State University Region 5 High School Science & Engineering Fair, which will take place virtually this year on March 5.
