SOUTH EASTON — Superintendent Luis Lopes and Principal Leslie Weckesser are pleased to share that junior Anne LaMotte has received an Honorable Mention Award in the 2021-2022 Massachusetts Partnerships for Youth (MPY) annual Poster Project.
MPY has hosted the poster project since 2009 to engage students on important topics and provide a platform for their voices. This year’s theme is “Peace Brings the World Together.” The project endeavors to create and sustain an environment where all students can participate in school peacefully.
The theme is based on an initiative from the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute. Based on the initiative, there are seven principles of peace including Love, Unity, Faith, Hope, Courage, Justice and Forgiveness.
Suggested topics for the posters included ways to promote peace and understanding with diverse school and community members; treat people with dignity and compassion; deepen a commitment to peacemaking; develop skills to address and challenge racism; bridge differences to find common ground; resolve disputes without violence; and speak against prejudice and discrimination.
LaMotte, a junior from Brockton, designed her poster featuring a dove sewing the world together. According to LaMotte, she chose a dove because they are considered to be a symbol of peace. To represent peace, the dove is sewing up two broken parts of the world, therefore bringing the world together.
“I went with the sewing idea because when you think about something that’s broken or torn, you think of ways to put it together,” LaMotte said. “With sewing, many times you will see the mark left from sewing a piece of clothing back together, and we would see the mark of the world being put back together with peace.”
“It is clear that Anne put a great deal of time and effort into her submission, and she created an inspiring and meaningful piece that shows her artistry,” Principal Weckesser said. “We are very proud of her for taking on this challenge and participating in this year’s MPY Poster Project.”
