HINGHAM — The Hingham Select Board is now accepting applicants for the Town’s newly-formed Human Rights Commission.

At its Feb. 8 meeting, the Select Board voted to form a Human Rights Commission (HRC). The HRC represents the Town’s commitment to supporting the rights of all persons in town and to promote diversity, equity and inclusion in Hingham.

The Select Board is accepting applications from residents who wish to be considered for the Commission. The Commission shall consist of 13 members, made up of seven Town representatives, one Hingham High School student recommended by the School Committee, and five at-large members who are Hingham residents appointed by the Select Board.

Interested candidates should complete a Talent Bank form on the Town’s website. Applications will be accepted until Friday, March 11. For more information, call the Select Board’s office at 781-741-1451.

The Commission shall have the following charges and responsibilities, as outlined on the Commission’s page on the town website:

  • Develop opportunities to build community awareness concerning human rights, including, but not limited to, diversity, equity and inclusion within the Town of Hingham and beyond, through educational programs, summits, panels, celebrations and other community events.
  • Develop programs and initiatives and provide community resources to promote human rights, including, but not limited to, diversity, equity, and inclusion within the Town of Hingham.
  • Annually, and more often as may be requested by the Select Board, provide written or verbal reports to the Select Board on Commission activities.

Members will not receive compensation for serving on the Commission.

“Establishment of the Human Rights Commission confirms the Town of Hingham’s commitment to assuring equal rights and privileges for all persons,” Select Board Chair Joe Fisher said. “The Select Board looks forward to working with an active Commission that will help build community awareness among residents, businesses and visitors to Hingham.”

For more information on the Commission, including details on its creation, membership details and specific procedures, visit the Commission’s page on the Town of Hingham website.
