BOURNE — Superintendent Kerri Anne Quinlan-Zhou and School Adjustment Counselors Annmarie Ridings and Margaret Gilbert are pleased to announce that the Bourne Intermediate School is taking part in the annual Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) Week this week.

RAK Week is held in schools across the country Feb. 13-19, coinciding with National Random Acts of Kindness Day on Thursday, Feb. 17.

Adjustment Counselors Ridings and Gilbert organized the week’s activities at BIS, which supported both students and staff in the school.

The school has a full slate of activities during RAK Week. Activities include:

Weeklong

Every day this week, the school day begins with a student and/or guest talking about kindness or reading a kindness quote after the Pledge of Allegiance.

Monday, Feb. 14

Kindness Bingo cards were given to students to fill out during the week. Prizes for completed cards will be distributed on Thursday and Friday via the school’s Kindness Kart. The cart will be circulating throughout the building on those days and will stop at every classroom.

The “Canalmen Caught Being Kind” project began. Students were given fish cutouts to fill out with the name of a peer or adult they “caught” being kind. The fish will be put on a mural in the school’s cafeteria, which was created by BIS art teacher Jillian Donovan.

Tuesday, Feb. 15

A Kindness Rally was held, with the Bourne High School Pep Band playing during lunches.

The Appreciation Station became available during lunch/recess. Both students and staff can write a note to someone to express gratitude, say hello and send cheer.

Wednesday, Feb. 16

The school once again sent out a Kindness Rocks video to highlight acts of kindness. Each classroom was provided with rocks and supplies for each student to paint one kindness rock.

“Bourne To Be Kind” shirts went on sale. Student t-shirts were on sale during all lunches for $5. The school will encourage the whole school community to wear their shirts on Friday to close out RAK week.

The Appreciation Station will also be available on this day.

Thursday, Feb. 17

The “Bourne To Be Kind” shirts will once again be on sale.

Superintendent Quinlan-Zhou and Assistant Superintendent Barbara Starkie will read/speak to students during lunches.

The Kindness Kart will visit classrooms to give prizes for completed Bingo cards.

Friday, Feb. 18

The Kindness Kart will visit classrooms to give prizes for completed Bingo cards.

An “End of Kindness Week” dance party will be held, with music played over the PA system at the end of the day for the entire school community to close out the week.

“Random Acts of Kindness Week is such a fun and engaging way for our students to not only learn about being kind to others, but also show kindness and appreciation towards their fellow students and school staff,” Principal Norton said. “I commend Margaret and Annmarie for all their hard work pulling this event together, and for all our students and staff for embracing the week’s activities. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for the rest of the week.”
