TEWKSBURY — Chief Ryan M. Columbus reports that a man was arrested overnight on multiple charges connected to an incident of breaking and entering.
MATTHEW MACDONALD, AGE 24, OF WESTFORD was arrested and charged with:
- Breaking and Entering into a Vehicle in the Nighttime for a Felony
- Operating Under the Influence of Liquor, Second Offense
- Operating a Motor Vehicle With a Suspended License
- Uninsured Motor Vehicle
At about 2:25 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5, Tewksbury Police were dispatched to the area of 86 Lowe St. for a report of a break-in to a vehicle.
While responding, Tewksbury Police were notified that the suspect fled the scene in a white SUV, which was quickly located on East Street. Officers subsequently stopped the vehicle, but the driver — later identified as MACDONALD — allegedly fled on foot.
MACDONALD was located a short time later and was subsequently taken into custody without further incident. MACDONALD showed signs of impairment during an on-scene investigation and was shown to have a blood alcohol content nearly twice the legal limit.
During its investigation, Tewksbury Police learned that the resident who reported the incident had been home when they heard the sound of their van’s engine starting outside. The resident went outside and saw the driver’s side door of their vehicle open and the engine running, and observed the suspect fleeing.
MACDONALD reported facial lacerations, which he suffered from falling during his attempt to flee, but refused medical treatment by EMS personnel.
MACDONALD was held without bail pending his arraignment Wednesday at Lowell District Court.
