ARLINGTON — Chief Julie Flaherty reports that after an intensive investigation, the Arlington Police Department arrested an alleged drug dealer earlier today.
DARRIUS D. HARRIS, AGE 32, OF EVERETT, was arrested by Arlington Police after a coordinated narcotics investigation. He was charged with:
- Possession of a Class B Substance (Cocaine) with Intent to Distribute (Subsequent Offense)
- Resisting Arrest
- Failure to Stop
After conducting an investigation into drug distribution activities in town, Arlington Police made contact with a man — later identified as HARRIS — on Tuesday, Jan. 4. During the investigation, HARRIS agreed to come to a location in Arlington, allegedly to conduct a drug transaction. When officers approached HARRIS, he fled. After a coordinated effort, and a brief foot pursuit, he was captured by an Arlington Police officer working a safety detail nearby.
HARRIS was taken into custody in the area of Paul Revere Road at approximately 12:35 p.m. A quantity of drugs, later testing positive for cocaine, was found on his person during the arrest.
At this time, HARRIS is being held at the Arlington Police Department pending his arraignment Wednesday at Cambridge District Court. This investigation remains ongoing and additional charges may be brought against HARRIS.
The scourge of drug distribution and substance use disorder continues to be one of the largest public health and public safety concerns in the nation, even as all eyes are on the COVID-19 pandemic over the past 25 months. Earlier Tuesday, an Arlington resident died of a suspected drug overdose.
HARRIS is known to police.
“Drug use, abuse and distribution continue to be the top quality of life and public safety concerns in communities around the nation,” Chief Flaherty said. “I wish to commend our Arlington Police investigators on a job well done in apprehending someone who allegedly profits from the suffering and misery of others.”
These are allegations. All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty.
