STONEHAM – Chief James McIntyre and Superintendent John Macero wish to provide an update on the ongoing investigation into a threat posted to social media by a Stoneham Central Middle School student.
At approximately 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 14, Stoneham Middle School staff were made aware of a post on Snapchat by a student, which contained threatening language. Immediately upon becoming aware of the post, school administrators engaged with the Stoneham Police Department to begin an investigation.
Stoneham Police have also been investigating reports of threats made toward individuals. It has been determined none of these threats were credible and that there is no danger to students or staff as a result of these incidents.
School staff and police met with students this morning to reassure them that the school remains safe. Stoneham Public Schools are continuing to investigate the incident as well and the student will face discipline in accordance with district policy.
Stoneham Police, in cooperation with NEMLEC School Threat Assessment and Response Team (STARS) had an increased presence at the middle school today, and Stoneham Police will have an increased presence at the school for the remainder of the week, in an effort to alleviate any safety concerns students may have.
“The importance of our close, collaborative relationship with the Stoneham Police Department has been on display throughout this week and I am grateful for their support in ensuring the continued safety of our school community,” Superintendent Macero said.
“We take all threatening language that affects our town’s schools seriously and we are confident that there is no credible threat at this time,” Chief McIntyre added. “There is no room for this kind of behavior and I want to thank our school colleagues for immediately engaging with us so that we could thoroughly investigate together.”
